Overview

Summary Squirrel is a YouTube video summarizer Chrome extension. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect (almost none) and how the extension works.

Data Collection

We do not collect, store, or sell any personal data. Your video data never leaves your device.

• No accounts or sign-ups required
• No analytics or tracking scripts
• No cookies
• No data sent to external servers
• No browsing history collected

How It Works

Summary Squirrel uses Chrome's built-in on-device AI to summarize YouTube videos. All processing happens locally on your computer:

• Video transcript: The extension reads caption/subtitle data from the YouTube page you are currently viewing. This data stays on your device and is never transmitted anywhere.
• AI summarization: The summary is generated using Chrome's built-in language model, which runs entirely on your device. No data is sent to any cloud AI service.
• Clickable timestamps: Timestamp links interact only with the YouTube video player on the current tab.

Permissions

The extension requests the following permissions:

• activeTab: To read content from the currently active YouTube tab when you click Summarize.
• tabs: To check if the current tab is a YouTube video page.
• scripting: To extract video transcript data and control the video player for timestamp navigation.
• sidePanel: To display the summary in Chrome's side panel.
• Host permission (youtube.com): To access YouTube page content for transcript extraction.

Advertising

Summary Squirrel displays non-personalized promotional links in the side panel footer. These are static links — they are not targeted based on your browsing history, video content, or any personal data. No tracking pixels, cookies, or user profiling is used for advertising. Clicking these links is entirely optional and governed by those websites' own privacy policies.

Third-Party Services

Summary Squirrel does not use any third-party analytics, tracking, or data collection services. Future versions may include non-personalized ad networks; this policy will be updated accordingly.

Data Storage

The extension does not store any data persistently. Video transcripts and summaries exist only in memory during your current session and are discarded when you close the side panel or navigate away.

Children's Privacy

Summary Squirrel does not knowingly collect any information from children under the age of 13.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date.
